Our Approach to Arthritis
Arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by inflammation and pain in one or more joints, which can significantly impair mobility and quality of life. While there are various conventional treatments available for arthritis, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids, these medications can have significant side effects and may not be suitable for all patients. As a doctor of Chinese medicine and acupuncturist, I believe that acupuncture and Chinese medicine offer a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of arthritis.
In Chinese medicine, arthritis is generally classified as a form of "Bi-syndrome," which refers to a group of conditions characterized by pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving the joints. Bi-syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors, including external pathogens such as wind, cold, and dampness invading the body, as well as internal factors such as blood stasis and Qi deficiency. The treatment of arthritis with acupuncture and Chinese medicine typically involves a combination of different modalities, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, and dietary therapy.
In Chinese medicine, arthritis is believed to be caused by the accumulation of pathogenic factors in the body, such as wind, cold, and dampness. These factors can invade the body through the skin, respiratory system, or digestive system, and then settle in the joints, causing inflammation and pain. Bi-syndrome is also associated with internal imbalances, such as blood stasis or Qi deficiency, which can cause joint pain and stiffness.
In Chinese medicine, the invasion of external pathogens such as wind, cold, and dampness can disrupt the flow of Qi and blood in the body, leading to joint pain and stiffness. Wind is associated with sudden onset and rapid changes in symptoms, while cold is associated with stiffness and aching pain that worsens in cold weather. Dampness is associated with heavy, swollen joints and a sensation of heaviness in the affected area.
The treatment of arthritis with acupuncture and Chinese medicine is based on the principle of regulating the flow of Qi and blood, expelling pathogenic factors such as wind, cold, and dampness, and tonifying Qi and nourishing blood. Acupuncture is often used to promote the flow of Qi and blood in the affected area, while herbal medicine may be prescribed to address underlying imbalances and expel pathogenic factors.
The selection of acupuncture points and herbal formulas for the treatment of arthritis will vary depending on the specific type of arthritis and the individual's symptoms. For example, in the case of wind-cold-damp bi-syndrome, the acupuncturist may select points that promote the flow of Qi and blood and expel pathogenic factors, while herbal formulas that are warming and dispersing may be prescribed. In cases of blood stasis, the acupuncturist may select points that promote blood circulation and prescribe herbal formulas that invigorate blood and reduce stagnation.
Studies have shown that acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be effective for the treatment of arthritis. In one study published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies, acupuncture was found to significantly reduce pain and improve physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Another study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that an herbal formula containing Radix Rehmanniae and Radix Angelicae Sinensis was effective in reducing joint inflammation and pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Arthritis is a complex condition that can be challenging to treat with conventional medicine. However, acupuncture and Chinese medicine offer a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of arthritis. By regulating the flow of Qi and blood, expelling pathogenic factors, and tonifying Qi and nourishing blood, acupuncture and herbal medicine can address underlying imbalances and reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. As a doctor of Chinese medicine and acupuncturist, I encourage patients with arthritis to explore these alternative therapies and experience the many benefits they can provide.
