Our Approach to Labor Overdue with Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

Labor is considered overdue if it extends beyond the 42nd week of pregnancy. In Western medicine, this condition is also called post-term pregnancy, This is due to the placenta aging and not functioning as efficiently as it should, which can cause problems with the baby's oxygen and nutrient supply. This can result in fetal distress, stillbirth, or the need for an emergency cesarean section.  In Chinese medicine, it is known as prolonged pregnancy or difficult labor. Labor overdue can pose potential risks to both the mother and the baby, and prompt treatment is necessary.

In Chinese medicine, labor overdue is viewed as a result of qi and blood stagnation in the mother's body, leading to obstruction of the uterus and preventing the baby from descending.  Symptoms may include abdominal distension and discomfort, lower back pain, and emotional stress. This is commonly caused by factors such as emotional stress, physical exhaustion, and improper diet. In Western medicine, clinical manifestations of labor overdue include decreased fetal movements, slow or no cervical dilation, and an abnormal amount of amniotic fluid. In Chinese medicine,

The diagnosis is typically based on the gestational age of the fetus and the presence of signs of fetal distress. In Chinese medicine, diagnosis is based on observation of clinical symptoms and pulse and tongue examination, as well as taking into account the overall health and constitution of the mother.

Treatment in Western medicine, the most common approach to treating labor overdue is induction of labor, which may involve medical interventions such as oxytocin, prostaglandins, or rupturing the membranes. In Chinese medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine can be used to promote the circulation of qi and blood, regulate the meridians, and relax the uterus.

Acupuncture points such as Hegu (LI4), Sanyinjiao (SP6), and Zusanli (ST36) may be used to promote the downward movement of qi and blood, while herbal formulas such as Tao Hong Si Wu Tang may be prescribed to nourish the blood and regulate menstruation. In addition, dietary and lifestyle adjustments may also be recommended to help support the mother's overall health and well-being.

Studies have shown that acupuncture and herbal medicine can effectively promote cervical ripening and induce labor in cases of labor overdue, with fewer side effects compared to medical interventions. Acupuncture has also been found to be effective in reducing anxiety and stress levels in pregnant women, which may contribute to a smoother labor process.

In summary,  Labor overdue can pose potential risks to both the mother and the baby, and prompt treatment is necessary. In Chinese medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine can be effective treatment options for promoting cervical ripening and inducing labor, as well as supporting the overall health and well-being of the mother. It is important for women to consult with a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for their individual needs.
